Eight Ways to Healthier Eating

Augusta, Ga. – The food choices you make each day affect your health. So feed your body well.
According to the American Dietetic Association, a healthy eating plan emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. It includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts, but is low in saturated fats, cholesterol, salt and sugars.

In recognition of National Nutrition Month in March, here are eight ways to eat your way to better health:



1. Mix up a breakfast smoothie by blending frozen strawberries and a banana with low-fat milk.

2. Stuff an omelet with vegetables. You can make your egg a hearty meal by adding broccoli, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, onions and low-fat cheddar cheese.

3. Spice up a baked potato with salsa, beans and low-fat cheese.

4. Try going veggie with your pizza toppings. Use peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms or any vegetables that appeal to your taste buds.

5. Grill colorful vegetable kabobs packed with tomatoes, onions, peppers, zucchini, and add a few shrimp or chicken breast pieces.

6. Replace chips with fresh vegetables with your favorite low-calorie dip or salad dressing.

7. Add color to a salad with mandarin oranges, apple slices or raisins.

8. For a homemade banana split substitute, try topping a sliced banana with a scoop of low-fat frozen yogurt and sprinkle with a tablespoon of peanuts, pecans or almonds.
