(Atlanta, Georgia) ---”Eliminating or amending the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of constitutional citizenship would be a dangerous act of great significance. The 14th Amendment was adopted in order to prevent exactly what Pearce and his allies are trying to do. Its plain language settled the question of what makes somebody a U.S. citizen, and it made clear that states can never again try to create an underclass of Americans. It redefined the United States as a nation committed to equality and such a commitment should not - and cannot - be discarded lightly,” said Jerry González, Executive Director of GALEO.
Constitution or birthright citizenship is fundamental to who we are as Americans, and cannot be taken away by any government official. The American Citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment states explicitly that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” The 14th Amendment also forbids any state from abridging the “privileges or immunities of citizens” and from denying to any person the “equal protection of the laws.” These provisions are crucial to making us one nation, indivisible. Decimating this principle would be a grave mistake, and would threaten the freedom of all Americans.
